In the first of two parts, Chris & I interview Dan Mazur, one of the first-time organizers of M.I.C.E. (The Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo) three days before the debut of the show. Experience one of Matt’s proudest moment in segues, Chris’ most triumphant audio tech achievements, and Dan’s acceptance of “the weird, the fringe, and the marginal…”

M.I.C.E. is a free show dedicated to independent, alternative, small-press, and self-published comics, webcomics and ‘zines. It’s taking place at the Art Institute of Boston, 700 Beacon Street, Boston, MA 02215 on September 25th from 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM.

Join us next time when we meet up again with Dan after the show (and the inevitable post-show bender) to hear what the experience of putting on a first time comics expo!

Emme’s Aunt Diana and niece Andrea dropped by last week. Andrea asked me to draw her something, so I did:

I’ve been really taken lately by how dramatic the cloud formations over Vermont have been. We’ve had such a wet, humid summer it seems like the sky is just a few combining clouds away from another downpour. This is also one of the more naturally occurring brush/pen combination pictures I’ve done.

And Andrea told me she plays soccer, so…

I’m working on “Recidivists” right now, a collection of anthology submissions that missed their deadlines. The biggest comic in it, Deanna’s Story, will be about a girl I’m modeling on Mrs. Hersh.

I’m already sick of the sniping at Frank Miller’s Spirit movie, because I don’t know enough about The Spirit to join in.

Luckily, I’m near a collection of the entire Spirit archive, and I started reading. I’m beginning to wonder if Frank Miller really is so “off” with the movie… I mean:

Aside from everything else, is that crowbar really suggestive to anyone else?

I got a day to draw on vacation. To celebrate, I picked up a new cheap sketchbook. Only on the first page, but off to a good start:

I really need a scanner. Taking photos just doesn’t work!

Artists I was thinking of: Jim Rugg (notice girl’s failed Rugg-style nose shading) and Chris Bachelo, who I’m convinced inspired the B&W boyo there on the left.
